In our fast-paced society, we are constantly seeking the quickest methods to accomplish tasks. Waiting for a burger at a fast food joint, waiting for coffee to brew, or waiting for microwave popcorn to pop are all time-consuming activities that we can barely afford. Similarly, we certainly do not want to waste our precious time waiting for a sluggish computer to respond.

If you don't want to add more RAM to your computer, there are six steps you can follow to enhance its performance. These steps are mostly free of charge as they involve utilizing applications already present on your computer to speed it up.

To start, ensure that you begin by clearing out the Recycle Bin. This can be accomplished easily by directing your cursor towards the Recycle Bin symbol on your computer screen, right-clicking on it, and selecting the option to "Empty Recycle Bin."

Afterward, launch Internet Explorer and navigate to Tools, then click on Internet Options. Select "Delete Cookies" followed by "Delete Files." A window will appear where you should check the option "Delete all offline content" and click OK. Once completed, click OK to close the Internet Options window and exit Internet Explorer.

These two steps are the fastest and easiest, which is why we completed them first. Now, we will perform a Disk Cleanup. To do this, go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Disk Cleanup. The system will start calculating the amount of space you can free up. After completion, it will provide a list of files to delete. Some files may already be selected, but you can review the list and mark all the files you want to delete. Finally, click OK.

Now it is time to perform a disk defragmentation. This process can take a while, so it is recommended to schedule it when you have other tasks to attend to. For instance, you can set it up and then watch your favorite TV show, mow the lawn, or work out. The idea is to start by going to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and selecting Disk Defragmenter. Click on Analyze. If you are fortunate, you will see a notification saying "You do not need to defragment this volume." However, it is more likely that you will have to click on "Defragment." Once you click on it, you can proceed to do something else and return after an hour or two.

After completing the previous step, it is necessary to conduct a spyware scan. Most individuals are not aware of how easily they can become infected with spyware, so it is highly recommended to regularly perform scans. You have the option to choose any anti-spyware program, but it's important to note that no single program can eliminate all threats. To be cautious, it is advisable to run at least three different programs. The discoveries made during the scan may surprise you, as there is a possibility that your computer has been infected without your knowledge. Once the scans are finished and all spyware has been dealt with, it is time for the final step.

The final task is to perform an anti-virus scan, assuming you have already installed an anti-virus program on your computer. If you haven't, I strongly advise you to acquire one promptly. Once you have set up the anti-virus program, proceed to initiate the scan. The duration of this process may vary, taking anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours depending on the number of files on your hard drive. Therefore, set it up and engage in other activities. Return in approximately an hour.

After finishing all the necessary steps, reboot your computer and you will be amazed by how much faster and agile it feels. It is recommended to follow these six steps every week, and some of them can even be automated. By doing so, you can ensure that your computer maintains its performance similar to when you initially purchased it.
